Verrerie de Saint Just

Verrerie de Saint Just - Saint-Rambert

ZI la Verrerie 42170 Saint-Just Saint-Rambert

Founded in 1826, the Saint-Just Glassworks perpetuates the ancestral art of mouth-blown glassmaking. Each morning, molten glass is transformed by the glassblower’s breath into a cylinder, which is then opened and flattened into a sheet.

Please note: visits are open to guests aged 12 and above.

It is this fascinating spectacle that we invite you to discover.

— A company born on the banks of the Loire…

Established in 1826, this remarkable enterprise has an extraordinary history. It all began with Monsieur Antoine Pascal, who chose an ideal location on the banks of the Loire in Saint-Just. The site offered strategic advantages: the use of Loire sand for glass production, access to coal from the mines of Saint-Étienne, and convenient transport routes already established along the river by rambertes (traditional flat-bottomed boats).

Over time, successive owners of the glassworks discovered that the Loire’s sand was in fact unsuitable for their glassmaking—it was too dark in color and too difficult to melt.

— A move towards diversified production

Under the leadership of the Pelletier family, who acquired the glassworks in 1865, production shifted from bottle glass to colored glass for windows and stained glass, marking a decisive turn in the company’s evolution.

— The glassworks today: where tradition meets innovation

Today, the Saint-Just Glassworks—now part of the Saint-Gobain Group—continues the magical craft of mouth-blown glass, making it a unique site in France. Its production is notably used in the restoration of windows and stained glass for prestigious landmarks such as the Louvre Pyramid and the Château de Versailles.

Proud of its exceptional savoir-faire and its palette of 250 shimmering hues, the Verrerie de Saint-Just now turns toward the world of luxury and bespoke creation.
